Minutes of the October 2013 Meeting

Meeting minutes for 16 Wednesday 2013

In attendance: Alex, April, Barbara, Bob, Colin, Gina, Tilo 

Continued planning of film event: screening of Free China: The Courage to Believe, November 11, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. (setup at 6:30 p.m.), at Tredyffrin Library, 582 Upper Gulph Rd Strafford, PA 19087
  • Will attend: Alex, April, Barbara, Bob, Gina (possibly), Jeff (confirmed by email)
  • Marketing strategies
    • Group’s Twitter account (@AmnestyIntl342): Barbara scheduling regular tweets using HootSuite
    • Barbara will post to Amnesty Philadelphia Area Facebook page, will create event page
    • Group now has a contact e-mail account at amnestyintl342@hotmail.com
    • Members took copies of poster (designed by April) to post at libraries and other appropriate public places with bulletin boards within 20- to 30-minute drive of Strafford
    • Alex will post in King of Prussia area and Rotary Clubs in area
    • Other suggestions for places to post: Starbucks, Panera
    • Barbara will generate list of churches using database at work and e-mail info to them
    • Colleges and universities
    • Barbara has list of media (radio channels, newspapers) in Phila/Delco area and will make phone calls to try to get announcements/postings
    • Chinese communities: Tilo noted that there is a church with Chinese congregation at 11th and Vine, Philadelphia
Holiday card signing 
  • Our group has held holiday card signing outside of Ten Thousand Villages (271 Main St., Exton) every year around Human Rights Day, December 10
  • This year, we will hold event on Saturday, December 14, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Marsha will speak with manager of Ten Thousand Villages about proceeds-sharing opportunity

Meet and greet session with Steven Hawkins, the new executive director of AIUSA
  • Invitation extended to members to attend Monday, October 21, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ethical Society, Philadelphia

Action
  • Letters signed on behalf of Tobías Alonso Sánchez and Yosiveth Nava Herrer, Mexican activists whose lives were threatened. They are members of a grassroots organization opposing commercial development of communal lands in state of Pinotepa Nacional Municipality, Oaxaca State.
